Marking the silver jubilee of his iconic, propeller-sampling 1996 jungle anthem “The Chopper”, Dread Recordings head honcho Ray Keith AKA The Terrorist has assembled a pair of stonking new reinterpretations of the track, courtesy of two of the scene’s most exciting names right now: award-winning Manchester beatmaker Bou and fast-rising Biological Beats mainstay Traumatize.
With Shy FX and Keith himself having been the only producers to remix the song up until now, you know the calibre we’re dealing with here. Available both digitally and on marbled blue vinyl, The Chopper Remixes XXV opens with Bou’s version, which finds the Critical Music and Souped Up affiliate deploying slick 808s, flickering cymbals and gnarled basslines. The result is a punchy yet pared-back affair; a deft repurposing of the 25-year-old classic for the junglists of 2021.
Having recently been commissioned to remix songs by legends of the game including Ram Trilogy and Chase & Status, Traumatize has had a monumental eighteen months. His snarling, jump-up-inspired take on “The Chopper” has been circulating in sets for over a year now, with fans speculating that it would forever remain unreleased. Lo and behold, however, it’s here. Bursting into rugged crescendos marked by gritty, distorted synth work and coarse percussion, this intense VIP of the track has proven itself to be a versatile tool in the arsenal of DJs, enjoying heavy rotation in the sets of pioneering selectas including Randall and Doc Scott.
The Chopper Remixes XXV is available on 12” vinyl from 12 February. Digital copies will be available via Juno Download from 19 February, hitting other stores and streaming services on 26 February.
